A Bountiful Heart

Paul was speaking of giving to the needs of the persecuted church. There was no set amount to be given, only that which they purposed in their heart to give. God supplies and God gives grace to the giver. Some say we are no longer under the law, but before the law Abraham gave a tithe of 10% to the King of Salem, a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ. When we give it is as to the Lord. Give bountifully and receive of God bountifully.

2Co 9:6  But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
2Co 9:7  Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
2Co 9:8  And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
2Co 9:9  (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.
2Co 9:10  Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)
2Co 9:11  Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.

Giving is of the heart.

Deu 15:7  If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:

Finally, the Holy Spirit searches your heart.

Act 5:1  But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
Act 5:2  And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
Act 5:3  But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Act 5:4  Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
Act 5:5  And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

Do not be too hasty in what you do. Prepare before coming to church. If I were to look in my wallet at the last moment, there would not be much cash, so prepare ahead of time. If you purpose in your heart to give a certain amount, that is fine. Do it from a happy heart, not by deception or from outside pressure. Give to other needs too, where your heart leads you to give.
