Faith and Fear

Mar 4:37  And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.

Mar 4:38  And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

Mar 4:39  And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Mar 4:40  And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

Mar 4:41  And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

What was it that Jesus said to the disciples? "Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? " They knew that the wind and waves were strong enough to sink the ship. We would probably be fearful as well. They came to Jesus who was asleep on a pillow. How many find it hard to sleep because of fears and worries?  Jesus was at peace in the storm and he slept. Remember that Jesus was a man but he was also the son of God. He spoke "Peace be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. Now the disciples had another kind of fear. They were sinful men in the presence of God.  Nothing could harm Jesus until he allowed it in the fullness of time. I suppose a cliche to remember is that we do not fear when we know that Jesus is in our boat. Our boat the housing of our eternal soul and spirit. In all that has come to bring me fear, I have found peace that comes because of faith in Jesus. He still calms the storms that come. My favorite verse has been:

John 14:27  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
