Wise in their own eyes

Mat 27:40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
Mat 27:41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
Mat 27:42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
Mat 27:43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

Do not listen to the revilers, to those who mock and try to put you down. Jesus listened to Our Father in heaven. He did his will, not his own. Just as satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, satan used the words of others to send fiery darts to bring his soul down.
They thought that they had won when they nailed Jesus to the cross. He allowed this because it was the plan of God from the beginning of creation.

Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Eph 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Eph 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

It was the utmost act of love for Jesus to willingly go to the cross so that we might be saved from the wrath of God. He paid for our sins, taking our place. He could have spoken the word and he could have come down; but if so we would still be bound.
He had spoken to Peter:

Mat 26:52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
Mat 26:53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
Mat 26:54 But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

Would they have believed in Jesus if he had of come down from the cross? No they would not have, for he was raised from the dead as in the story of the rich man and the beggar and they still would not have believed.

Luk 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Moses and the prophets spoke of the Messiah. Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22 prophesy of the messiah on the cross, but they would not hear. Speak the word, hear God, if they will not hear, then neither will we hear their insults. If they mock God they will face him at judgement day.

2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Jesus went to the cross for all, but we must repent of sins and come to him in faith. Do not insult the Master, humbly come to him and be received into everlasting life. Pray for those who resist Jesus, for they resist their own salvation.
