Virtue Power

Luke 6:17  And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

Luk 6:18  And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

Luk 6:19  And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

The Greek word for virtue is also translated as power. It is dynamis, from which we get the word dynamite. When Nobel invented dynamite he meant it for good. It was able to blast through rock, however it also was used for bad things, especially in war. He wanted it to be used for good so there was a Nobel peace prize given yearly for those bringing about peace. However, like all things of man, this too was corrupted to reward political ideologies.

The word "dynamis".is more often translated as power. Strongs concordance lists the various uses of the word.

strength power, ability

  1. inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person or thing exerts and puts forth

  2. power for performing miracles

  3. moral power and excellence of soul

  4. the power and influence which belong to riches and wealth

  5. power and resources arising from numbers

  6. power consisting in or resting upon armies, forces, hosts

We should be like Jesus, using power for good.  The Bible warns us of evil powers, evil spirits in high places.

Eph 6:10  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Eph 6:11  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Eph 6:12  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Eph 6:13  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Through Jesus there is a greater power. Pray that his virtue will go forth in an evil world and that through Jesus we might do good.
