Num 31:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Num 31:2 Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.
Num 31:3 And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the LORD of Midian.

Moses was given one more thing to do before he would die. The Midianites
had shown themselves the enemy of Israel, so they were to be destroyed. I see
this as the continuous sins of the leaders causing the wrath of God. Moses' own father in
law, Jethro, or Reuel, was a priest of Midian and he helped Moses, even giving
him his daughter Zipporah as his wife as he kept sheep in the desert for forty
years. It is interesting to me that Moses met Jethros daughters at a well, just
as Jesus would meet a Gentile woman at a well in Samaria. God arranges events
and he uses unlikely people for his plans.
Exo 2:19 And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the
shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.
Exo 2:20 And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.
Exo 2:21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.
