The Cost of Discipleship

Luk 14:28  For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
Luk 14:29  Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
Luk 14:30  Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
Luk 14:31  Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
Luk 14:32  Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
Luk 14:33  So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

We come to Jesus by faith and receive salvation and eternal life.  We should want to grow in him to be more like him instead of holding on to our old habits and behavior. To be a disciple of Jesus is to be a learner of him. In the parable of the tower we are to sit down and determine if we will be able to finish the tower, or will we be able to finish our walk together with him?

The second parable has a war between two kings. I see this as God, King Jesus and the powers of the devil.  We must determine to fight the fight by not giving in to the devil. This requires dedication, remembering that He that is in us is the overcomer. ( 1Jn 4:4  Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. ) I receive peace from him no matter what battle I may face.

Jesus finishes saying " Luk 14:33  So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. " We should definitely give this our thoughts and meditation. Are we willing to give all to Jesus?  What does he require of us? What does his word say?  Is it our finances?  Is it moral purity he is seeking?  Is it our utmost for his service?  What is the Holy Spirit saying to you? Are we willing to be his disciple? What will we do now? Learning is a change of behavior.
